We have long specialized in the sale and setting of handcut opal. Each of the opals that we carry and set is a unique gem. Each opal is handcut from the rough to enhance the specific beautiful properties of that particular piece of rough. The result is often an irregular shape rather than a calibrated size, and a gem of of particularly brilliant colors.

The Birth of the Opal by Ella Wheeler Wilcox. The Sunbeam loved the Moonbeam, and followed her low and high, but the Moonbeam fled and hid her head, She was so shy - so shy. The Sunbeam wooed with passion; Ah, he was a lover bold! And his heart was afire with mad desire For the Moonbeam pale and cold. She fled like a dream before him, Her hair was a shining sheen, And oh, that fate would annihilate The space that lay between! Just as the day lay panting In the arms of the twilight dim, The Sunbeam caught the one he sought And drew her close to him. But out of his warm arms, startled And stirred by Love's first shock, She sprang afraid, like a trembling maid, And hid in a niche of a rock. And the Sunbeam followed and found her, And led her to Love's own feast; And they were wed on that rocky bed, And the dying Day was their priest. And lo! - The beautiful Opal!

Mysterious opals contain the wonders of the skies - sparking rainbows, fireworks, and lightning - shifting and moving in their depths. Opal has been treasured throughout history around the world. Archaeologist Louis Leakey found six-thousand year old opal artifacts in a cave in Kenya! Roman historian Pliny described the beauty of opal as the combination of the beauty of all other gems: "There is in them a softer fire than the ruby, there is the brilliant purple of the amethyst, and the sea green of the emerald - all shining together in incredible union. Some by their splendor rival the colors of the painters, others the flame of burning sulphur or of fire quickened by oil." Opal was much loved and valued highly by the Romans, who called it opalus. At the same time, opal was also sought in what would become the Americas. The Aztecs mined opal in South and Central America. Opal was also treasured in the Middle Ages and was called ophthalmios, or eye stone, due to a widespread belief that it was beneficial to eyesight. Blonde women wore opal necklaces to protect their hair from losing its color. Some thought the opal's effect on sight could render the wearer invisible.

Noema Gems was brought into being back in 1987. The owners Ron & Mary Ann Schanfish were at that time attending a chimney sweep convention in New England, and stopped off in Oxford County Maine to look up the boyhood home of a favorite author, where we stumbled upon one of the famous pegmatite tourmaline mines [the nubble, I think it was]. We walked out of the woods unto the old mine road and were dazzled by the bright sunlight shining off of the thousands of sheets of mica dropped off the trucks fifty years before. We were hooked! We came back home, bought the remnants of several rock shops, purchased a store front, and were off and running. Since then we have added gem shows, mail order, and now internet service to Noema Gems. Take a look around our web site, and see if you can't find something of interest. New items and whole new sections are added regularly, so do stop back often. Thank you from Ron & Mary Ann Schanfish - Noema Gems.
