Lark Quarry
 |
A trip into history.
This a fantastic place and it is a must almost as good as an opal
mine.
In a dry, rocky area where the spinifex grows Southwest of Winton,
dinosaurs once roamed. That is, coelurosaurs, carnosaurs and ornithopods.
And at Lark Quarry Environmental Park, the traces of these animals
can be seen at one of the most amazing historic sites in the country.
The hot, dusty area is a long way removed from the muddy environs
of a prehistoric lake. And yet, thats what it was, when one
day there was an incredible stampede - a dinosaur stampede which
has been recorded by nature and translated by man, 100 million years
after the event.

The dinosaur trackways are temporarily closed to visitors for a major
preservation upgrade sponsored by the Queensland Heritage Trails Network.
The site preservation upgrade includes the construction of a state-of-the-art
building that is designed to stabilise environmental conditions on the
track surface and will include fascinating interpretative displays. The
building design incorporates two large mud brick walls designed to minimise
temperature fluctuations within the building, keeping it from 20 to 24
degrees all year round.
As part of the entrance fee to the trackways, guided tours of the site
will be provided by specially trained on-site guides.
The site is expected to reopen to visitors in June or July, but contact
the information centre at the Waltzing Matilda Centre for the latest details.
