Quilpie

Quilpie is opal country.
This most colourful semi-precious stone is Australia’s national
gemstone and the Quilpie mining district is actually the largest producer
of boulder opal in the world. There are at least 200 leases currently
being worked in the shire. |

Events
This year, the information centre will feature working demonstrations
from volunteer opal cutters who will be there three days a week showing
how the opal is taken from the stone and polished.
Demonstrations will be given on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons
from 1.00pm to 3.00pm during the tourist season, and by request at weekends.
The cut stones will also be available for sale.
Quilpie’s annual events include the Boulder Opal Expo
in June, the Kangarangado which is always held the Wednesday
before the Birdsville Races and the Quilpie and District Show
in September.
